A trip to Queenstown is a well-known pilgrimage to Central Otago that travellers from Canterbury and around the world partake in. They venture down south to escape and enter a mountainous region rich in history and outdoor activity. I was looking for my own escape down south with a twist of private luxury. That’s where I discovered Hulbert House.
An elegant Victorian villa built in 1888, Hulbert House has been restored and transformed into one of Queenstown’s most exclusive lodges. The Annual World Travel Awards recently honoured Hulbert House with Leading Boutique Accommodation for 2024. It’s intimate, private and the views over Lake Wakatipu are definitely award-winning.
Hulbert House holds a distinguished reputation as one of New Zealand’s most elegant boutique lodges. Situated in a tranquil setting, distanced from the hustle and bustle of Queenstown, yet conveniently only a 5-minute walk away, the beautifully restored lodge presents opulent suites draped in Victorian elegance.
Upon arrival, I entered through a secured gate then drove up the gravel driveway to the front entrance where I was greeted with a smile by House Manager Chris. Check-in was seamless and the complimentary valet parking services set the tone. Chris looked after every detail of my stay from beginning to end. From lighting the fire, topping up my chosen room amenities to hosting me for the daily pre-dinner drinks and canapés, and sharing stories, Chris was the man of the manor and looked after guests in true old-world style. I was welcomed with a drink by the fire and the bags were swiftly sorted while beginning my two days of indulgence.
The interior of Hulbert House is also steeped in history. A Victorian home made of local timber with original elements and elegance throughout. Photographs from yesteryear adorn the walls and take you on a journey back in time marking the making of industry in Queenstown. Each room is uniquely designed with notable nostalgia intermixed with modern amenities. With overlooking views of Lake Wakatipu, surroundings of lush foliage and an on-site garden, Hulbert House is nestled away from the centre of the town’s hustle and bustle.
